Have you ever shed a tear and felt all emotional while watching a scene from a movie or have you turn around and tell yourself that if he or she can do it SO can you? If you have, you are not alone. I would say probably half the people watching the same movie as you felt the same way too. Regardless of age, there will always be a movie or two that inspires and motivates someone, somewhere to be a whole new different person whether it is to change their looks or attitude towards life. Sometimes, a movie plays out the reflection of oneself and because of that you can somehow relate to the scenes, the characters and the story behind it.
So you ask, "What makes a great movie great to me"? Everything I suppose and my greatest movie of all times goes to "The Devil Wears Prada", played by three beautiful and talented actresses Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs and Emily Blunt as Emily. If you have yet to watch this movie, you are missing out big time. I can't think of better people playing these roles in the movie. I am simply in love with everything about the movie, the set, the fashion, the style, the contour, the colors and with no questionable doubt all thanks to Patricia Field, the great costume designer for the movie which she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Costume Design in 2007.
Every single time I play that movie over and over again, rewinding and forwarding to my favorite scenes, listening to the music and speaking the lines out loud, never fails to inspire and encourage me to work harder towards what I want to achieve. Some people would think that this movie is all about glamour and fame which is NOT true because what people do not see is the truth behind the "Crueltality" of the Fashion and Media industry being perceptible to the audience but I don't mean it in a bad way. If you want to be acknowledged for your work, you must first EARN the recognition by working your butt off to be on top of the game. If you are a Fashion Stylist, Photographer, Editor, Creative Director, Make Up Artist, Art Director, Journalist, Blogger, the list just goes on, you know what it takes to be the BEST of the Best and to survive in this industry.
This movie inspires me to be WHO I want to be and not WHAT I can be. Sometimes when it gets a little too rough to take in, I take a step back to do some self-reflection, again it's all about choices in life. My favorite quote by Nigel played by Stanley Tucci in The Devil Wears Prada said, "That's what happens when you start doing well at work. Let me know when your entire life goes up in smoke, then it's time for a promotion". On this note, as much as I try to be practical, I often have dreams about being the next Anna Wintour (my no. 1 idol) but luckily I have a very grounded and down to earth partner who would gently guide me down from the heavenly clouds and whisper in my ears, "We still need to feed the kids, pay the rent and work towards retirement"!
Life is also about practicality, sustainability and reality. Whatever it is, I am deeply blessed to be able to do what I love and yet strike a balance on what I need to live on. No matter how bad your day gets, how cruel the world is, how people perceives you to be, you can make the choice of how you want to live your life. Continue to be inspired and work towards your goal in life.
