3 weeks ago, I attended a fashion showcase by ASEAN designers (AFDS) held at M Social Singapore. The response was overwhelming, the collections were spectacular, the designers were outstanding individuals and I am honored to have an exclusive interview with one of the designers from Malaysia, Melvin Shah.
Thanks to Melvin, I was able to attend this fashion show and through the PR company (AbsolutePR), I got my media pass invite pretty quickly. On the day of the fashion show, there was a preview session before the actual show for all medias having the first peak to the designers' collection. You can imagine how big my eyes were when I came into Melvin's exclusive suite to preview his collections and was given the most sincere warm welcome. He hosted us with drinks (bottled mineral water) and fresh grapes before presenting his latest collection, theme and ideas.
He was the only designer who chose to present his collections to media outside his balcony space and it was just as though I was attending an exquisite designer showcase in Paris with the light breeze and medium sunlight shining across the glass panels. The feeling was divine, the collections were my favorite and what can I say, the designer Melvin has outdone himself.
Here's a glimpse of the exclusive interview on what you should know about Melvin and his label Melson.
Q: A short introduction of yourself, and what have sparked your interest in fashion?
M: I started my career as a make up artist at an early age and became a trainer for a few big brands such as Versace, YSL, Lancôme and By Terry cosmetic. Back then I was surrounded by creative people (Fashion designers, hair stylist, photographer and fashion journalist) from the fashion industry and thus found my inner passion in fashion design.
Q: Are you self taught or did you study fashion design?
M: I majored in fashion design in one of the fashion school located in Chinatown, KL. Back then, Chinatown was considered the focal location for all fashion design schools and it took me a year to complete my course in becoming a Fashion Designer.
Q: When was your label "Melson" created and how did you come up with this name? Any story behind this?
M: I started my label in 2005, creating ready to wear (RTW) casual collection for women who seeks comfortable, easy to wear, mix & match but yet timeless designs thus the birth of “I Nee by Melson”. In Mandarin, “I Nee” means "Love You". Gradually in 2010, I decided to venture on customization (made-to-measure) and hence decided to change the label to Atelier Prive Melson.
Q: How has your work/style changed since you began your own label?
M: As time passed, I have become more aware and sensitive to what's required in managing my customers' needs and expectation while running my retail business. Being able to stay ahead with what's trending in the Fashion world has become vital to me.
Q: What are you fascinated by at the moment and how does it feed into your design?
M: I have always been fascinated with the beauty and fashion set back in 1950s during Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn glam days where fashion statements were all about petticoat’s Maxi Dress and timeless fashion which are reflected in my latest collection.
Q: What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started your label?
M: The biggest lesson that I have learnt since I started out my own fashion line is how conservative should be designs be as not everyone would be able to accept too low a cut or too high a slip on the skirt and/or dresses. Less is more.
Q: What advice would you give to young designers out there?
M: My advice to young designer or upcoming designer is Find own market by doing research what customer need and what kind of designer you want to be. Either ready to wear or couture designer and stay focus.
Q: What’s your motto?
M: I love Coco Chanel quote <A girl should be two things, Classy and Fabulous>.
Q: Who inspires you?
M: I am always inspired by beauty and fashion dated back from 1950s.
Q: What are you working on next?
M: For now, I am busy with my latest collection for the upcoming LAOS Fashion Week 2017 together with AFDS.
